# Orientation

{% embed url="<https://youtu.be/aabJWHHDixA>" %}

**Notes for paying 24/7 members:** Since 24/7 access requires extra know-how — like shutdown procedures — we require a separate orientation before you get your access set up.

Watch the video above for more information on what orientations cover, then sign up here: <https://longmontpublicmedia.org/events/lpm-orientation-for-24-7-members/>

Can't make a listed time? Email us and we'll find another arrangement.

Once you've completed orientation, you'll also need to pass a short quiz to access our Open Path system. After passing, you'll get an email with the steps to finish setting up your 24/7 access.

# Memberships

Longmont Public Media (LPM) is a member-supported makerspace. To maintain our equipment and provide a high-quality creative environment, use of our studios and production spaces is reserved for our paying members.

To join Longmont Public Media, please visit our [membership page](https://longmontpublicmedia.org/support/membership/) for current tiers, pricing, and studio rates.

Would you like to teach a class, hold a workshop or give a talk on a subject you think people would find interesting? Longmont Public Media would love to host you! We encourage all our members to teach. Everyone knows enough about something to teach a class, give a workshop or give a talk on something. You don't need to be a Longmont Public Media member to use the space if it's something of value and that fits with our mission and subject areas.&#x20;

## How to Teach a class at Longmont Public Media

Interested in teaching a class at LPM? Here's how it works:

1. **Schedule a short meeting with us.** We'll chat about your class idea, answer any questions, and make sure it's a great fit for our community.
2. **Send us your class details.** After the meeting, you'll provide:
   * Class title
   * Description (make it interesting! Cover what the topic is, what you'll be doing, and what attendees will walk away with)
   * Preferred days and times
   * Whether it's a one-time or recurring class
3. **We'll take it from there.** LPM staff will add your class to our event calendar and get it in front of our community.

Ready to get started? Email us at <hello@longmontpublicmedia.org> to schedule your meeting.

## Additional Information

#### Charging for Classes:

While deciding how much to charge for your class, please keep in mind that certain Longmont Public Media members have 50% discount on classes.&#x20;

## Studio Clean Up

Once you are done, **please clean up and reset the studio to its default condition.** A lot of people use the studio and it is imperative that you clean up after yourself. Failure to do so will make LPM staff and members unhappy. Repeated notices about cleaning up will result in disciplinary action.

## Studio Reservations

The Studio is available for reservations via our reservation system. To make a reservation, please [vist this link](https://members.longmontpublicmedia.org/calendar/tv-studio/book). If you need to learn how to make a reservation, please [go here](/makerspace/studio-reservations).&#x20;

## How to use the Lighting Grid Control System

{% embed url="<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQuadKNLctQ>" %}

LPM has a ADJ 24 channel lighting board in the studio.

The ADJ currently controls 8 lights that are connected via DMX.

Lights 1-3 are the front lights; Lights 5-8 are the back lights

Power button is on the back of the device.&#x20;

Please see [Controlling In-Studio Grid Lights](/production-how-tos/controlling-in-studio-grid-lights) for more information.

## How to use the Backdrop Vinyl Roller

<figure><img src="/files/oSGftYjODRAlwiOkAYJB" alt=""><figcaption><p>Vinyl backdrop roller</p></figcaption></figure>

LPM has a vinyl backdrop roller that you can use for photography, videos, interviews, and more.&#x20;

It is somewhat tricky to roll down as the vinyl is heavier than you think. **NOTE:** do not use the chains to roll up/down the vinyl. It is too heavy and will result in the vinyl rolling down too fast and/or breaking the chain.

To roll down:

1. Use the safety ladder and position it next to the&#x20;
2. take out the safety grip clip&#x20;
3. Slowly roll the vinyl down to your desire length
4. Use the safety grip clip (as pictured below) to prevent the vinyl roll from continuing to roll down.

<figure><img src="/files/d4sLBO1beQlkXbyviitP" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

To Roll back up:

-Follow the instructions above, but in reverse :)&#x20;

{% embed url="<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1h0Mo2H1NqWF8jiQMhxFdUZhAyoVtYZACX1dXcQP7cqI/edit?usp=sharing>" %}

## How to use the Video Routing System

{% embed url="<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFOmcnzW954>" %}

LPM has a video routing system that lets you connect up to 3 (hardwired) cameras from the TV Studio to the [Live Streaming room](/makerspace/studios/live-streaming).&#x20;

This is done via an SDI routing system that was in place prior to LPM being in the building.

We have 3 HDMI cables that you can connect cameras into. These camera's then show up in vMix as DeckLink Duo 2, 3, and 4.&#x20;

## How to set up the Projector and Movie Screen

## How to turn on/off the LED lights

LPM has several globe LED lights in the studio you can use. Please watch this 99-second video in which Sergio explains how the lights can be controlled using the Feit Electric app on one of LPM’s iPads.

{% embed url="<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qp4rsWYDtnA>" %}

If you are planning to use the LED lights as house lights during a performance (lights off during the performance and turned on before the audience leaves), confirming that you can control the lights should be part of the preparation for the performance. In the unlikely event that a problem is encountered, assistance from an LPM staff member might be required to resolve the problem.

LPM iPads are available in the LPM Equipment Room. Each iPad is secured with the same passcode. As part of your Equipment Room orientation, you should have been given the passcode.

As Sergio explains in the video, the Feit Electric app is installed on most of LPM’s iPads.

<figure><img src="/files/8c1h8QIRz2OHkxK4V2Pv" alt="" width="375"><figcaption><p>Feit Electric icon on LPM iPad desktop</p></figcaption></figure>

The app requires credentials which have already been provided to the app on LPM iPads. If the app on one of the LPM iPads challenges you to enter credentials, see the **Troubleshooting** section below.

In his 99-second video, Sergio mentions pre-made settings which have been configured in the app. These are in the bar at the top of the screen which scrolls horizontally.

<figure><img src="/files/7fGL7a7MhUo5SfwEHDZe" alt="" width="375"><figcaption><p>'Dim Red' pre-made setting within Feit Electric app</p></figcaption></figure>

If you don’t see the pre-made settings, see the **Troubleshooting** section below.

If a light does not respond to attempts to turn it on, it is likely that the light does not have power. See the **Troubleshooting** section below for more information.

### Troubleshooting the LED lights

1. **The Feit Electric app has been known to fail to display the pre-made settings bar.**<br>

   **If you don’t see the pre-made settings, try restarting the app.**<br>

   To restart the app, double-press the iPad's home button to display all apps that are active on the iPad.\
   \
   Inactivate the Feit Electric app by sweeping it upward off the screen. (Don’t worry if you accidentally inactivate other apps. Apps can easily be restarted.)\
   \
   After inactivating the app, press the iPad home button once to return to the home screen.\
   \
   Then, touch the Feit Electric app icon to restart the app. (It might be necessary to scroll horizontally to other pages of the iPad home screen in order to find the app icon.)<br>
2. **If a light does not respond to attempts to turn it on via the app, the light might not have power.**<br>

   There is an inline rotary switch on each light's power cord:\
   ![](/files/0Qd3G98U3220JLJRCBOL)<img src="/files/nqiWas05XK9WI07Q2ozy" alt="" data-size="original">\
   \
   One of the studio ladders will be required to reach the switch. When power is restored to the light, it should turn on. (The setting of the light in the app does not matter when power is first restored.) If you turn a light off via a switch, please remember to turn the switch back on before turning the studio over to the next user.\
   \
   If the light does not turn on as the rotary switch is toggled, then a circuit breaker might be off. Like the sign on the cover says, circuit breakers settings should not be changed so that no one needs to encounter and troubleshoot this issue. Each of the four LED lights is on a separate breaker. Three of those breakers are marked by a fragment of orange gaffer tape. They are Breakers #10, #17, and #20. The fourth light is on Breaker #15 which is not marked with orange tape.

<div><figure><img src="/files/PWBPRdXps3I2solWCPbO" alt="" width="375"><figcaption><p>Circuit breaker box cover</p></figcaption></figure> <figure><img src="/files/QHnoNgESTTRDTIrcu8Dh" alt="" width="375"><figcaption><p>Circuit breaker box interior</p></figcaption></figure></div>

3. &#x20;**If the app challenges you to enter credentials, the credentials have already been provided to the app on LPM iPads.**\
   \
   If challenged to enter credentials, press the 'Log in' button. On the 'Log in' window that appears, tap the 'Email' field. Then, tap the saved credentials circled in red:\ <img src="/files/y1z0j4oDq2CgLgMRZXw0" alt="" data-size="original">\
   You will be prompted to enter the iPad passcode, which you should have been given as part of your Equipment Room orientation. Once you enter the passcode, the credential fields will be completed but the auto-fill prompt is obscuring the 'Log in' button. :persevere: Tap the 'Log in' label circled in red at the top of the 'Log in' window below to reveal the 'Log in' button and the 'I agree with [Privacy Policy](https://www.feit.com/pages/privacy-policy) and [Service Agreement](https://www.feit.com/pages/terms_and_conditions)' box, check the 'I agree ...' box, and press the 'Log in' button.\
   ![](/files/zDgkftBe1eOkw2EBIL4r)\
   \
   If you have trouble with these instructions, please consult [Trouble-shooting issues auto-filling credentials of apps on LPM iPads](/production-how-tos/trouble-shooting-issues-auto-filling-credentials-of-apps-on-lpm-ipads).<br>
4. **When all else fails, read the** [**Feit Electric documentation**](https://help.feit.com/hc/en-us/categories/4418771973399-Feit-Electric-App)**.** 😩\
   \

Open the Elgato Video Capture program located on the desktop.

Proceed through the setup wizard, choosing 4:3 aspect ratio, and adding a bit of extra time to the total runtime of the tape. (e.g. 50 minutes if the total runtime is 40 minutes, to allow some buffer for previews and information screens.)

STOP and REWIND on the tape deck, start recording in the program, then press PLAY on the tape deck.

Once the recording is finished, use the sliders to trim your recording, which can be found in the folder; C:\Users\Downstairs Office PC\Videos, which can be further edited as needed in other programs, such as DaVinci Resolve.

Open the OBS Studio program located on the desktop.

On the top menu, open Tools > Output Timer.

Set the approximate runtime with the text fields next to "Stop recording after:" making sure to add a bit of extra time to the total runtime of the tape. (e.g. 50 minutes if the total runtime is 40 minutes, to allow some buffer for previews and information screens.)

STOP and REWIND on the tape deck, click start recording in the program next to where you set the time, then press PLAY on the tape deck.

Once the recording is finished, the video can be found in the folder; C:\Users\Downstairs Office PC\Videos, which can be trimmed and edited as needed in other programs, such as DaVinci Resolve.

The photography shop is dedicated to the science and art of making images. Currently captained by Bob Rosinsky.

## Shop Specifics

The printers are located in the [Editing Room](/makerspace/studios/editing-room) and are connected **only** to the Mac Mini.&#x20;

The shop is equipped with an Epson P800 wide format printer. It's capable of making archival exhibition quality prints up to 17" X 22." In addtion to the Epson, there is a dedicated "snapshot" printer (HiTi P520L) that produces high quality 4" X 6" prints.

The photo editing workstation (i.e Mac Mini) is loaded with Adobe PhotoShop CC and features a color-calibrated sRGB monitor, so a picture displayed on the monitor matches closely with output from either printer.

**Certification is required to have access to the HiTi dye sublimation printer and/or the Epson P800 printer.**

Certification is not required for access to Photoshop.&#x20;

**However, please observe the following:**

# AIDA NDI PTZ Cameras

LPM currently has three Full-HD Optical Zoom PTZ cameras that are powered via ethernet. The information below aims to explain how to set-up and use the cameras along with their controller.

## ![](/files/Chn1X02JectJ9qoO7hYn)![](/files/E9fP4CXZBdaLDdmupquD)

## Web Settings&#x20;

To access the camera's web UI, open any major internet browser and type in the IP address: 10.1.10.114 for camera one, 10.1.10.133 for camera two, and 10.1.10.134 for camera three. You'll be greeted with a login screen, the username and password are both "admin".&#x20;

From here you'll be able to preview and control the camera in real time.&#x20;

![](/files/ABxAPT5shS5YejPLqFBy)

You'll also be given the ability to adjust a variety of settings such as:

Video Encode: Under Video Encode, you will have access to adjust the main and sub video parameters of the camera. These changes will also affect the quality of the stream.&#x20;

Video Transmission Settings: Under Video Transmission, you will find the options to adjust the output of your streams.&#x20;

Audio Encode: In the "audio encode" tab, audio can be turned on or off. You are also able to adjust the encode mode, samplerate, and bitrate. Generally, these settings should be left untouched.&#x20;

Image adjust: In this menu, you can adjust the same parameters found from the OSD menu. All settings will save over the OSD settings.&#x20;

Ethernet settings: In this menu, you can adjust ethernet settings of the camera. The current settings have been adjusted from default and should be generally left untouched.&#x20;

## Audio

To set up audio make sure the web settings are adjusted to the ones seen below. The camera does not come with a built-in microphone, but works with any 3.5mm connection. Simply plug any microphone with a 3.5 mm connection into the camera to receive audio.&#x20;

![](/files/flgLIYVXdxBDrCoxVCIs)

## AIDA CCU-IP Controller&#x20;

# Controlling In-Studio Grid Lights

Some lights hung on the grid are connected to a dimmer box that allows their intensity to be controlled by our "Scene Setter" dimming console. Lights connecting to this system as of November 2022 include the three lights behind the curtain track system, and the four "Encore" lights in a row set up in the middle of the grid.&#x20;

{% embed url="<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQuadKNLctQ&list=PLSYjfW1ySY4V2SD5I1NFas-C_nT5fKaTr>" %}

To turn the lights on:&#x20;

1. Locate the dimming console on the table below the hanging XLR cables.&#x20;
2. Toggle on the power switch located on the back righthand side of the console&#x20;
3. Locate the flashing "Blackout" button and click it to enable the lights&#x20;
   1. This button is automatically activated when you turn the console on as to not blind anyone if someone left the sliders all the way up
   2. There's no need to click this button when powering off, this button will automatically activate each time
4. Slide the sliders up to increase the intensity of each light&#x20;
   1. Sliders 1-3 at this time control the 3 backlights&#x20;
   2. Sliders 5-8 at this time control the 4 front lights&#x20;

To add more lights to the system, make sure the lights are DMX powered and plug them into a free DMX outlet on the dimmer box that hangs toward the front lefthand side of the grid.&#x20;

Note: If all directions are followed and the lights are not turning on, check the electrical panel to the right of the studio doors to make sure that the front stage lights and dimmer stage lights are flipped on. These are currently labeled with gray tape and should remain flipped towards the middle of the panel.&#x20;

# Trouble-shooting issues auto-filling credentials of apps on LPM iPads

If you are challenged for credentials in apps which are configured on LPM iPads, then the iPad should auto-fill the credentials as explained in the ordered list item titled **If the app challenges you to enter credentials, the credentials have already been provided to the app on LPM iPads** in [Troubleshooting the LED lights](/makerspace/studios/tv-studio#troubleshooting-the-led-lights).

The LPM iPads are available to all LPM members and settings do sometimes get changed in ways that might disable auto-fill in various ways. If auto-fill is not working, then open the Settings app.\
![](/files/xAgKAFiFiW2qqaMpfKo3)  \
and scroll down to and select Passwords:\
&#x20;![](/files/3RqsoU4KVD6o9iMFwJrG)\
You will be challenged to use Touch ID which you cannot use because this is not your personal iPad:\
![](/files/cYfVQx8N8ZUsuTGhzMcq)\
At this point, heave a heavy sigh because you are using an Apple Computer product. Then, try touching the iPad's home button lightly. If your technique is good, you will be rewarded with a prompt to enter the iPad passcode, which you should have been given as part of your Equipment Room orientation. If your technique is poor, you will need to retry selecting Passwords in Settings and futzing with the Apple graphical user interface until you are rewarded with a prompt to enter the iPad passcode:\
![](/files/B7l5ZmdRDoRdg3TfjnHn)\
Once you click 'Enter Passcode' and enter the iPad passcode, the Passwords column on the right will populate. If the option to enable iCloud Keychain is offered, it must be accepting by clicking Enable:\
![](/files/6Q3IGR0RflljmQcWHnfo)\
Otherwise, select 'Password Options' and confirm that 'AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys' and 'iCloud Keychain' are enabled:\
![](/files/sBrhyC3A9fhZGLcpAx2c)\
Once the options above are selected, restart the app you want to use. Double-press the iPad's home button to display all apps that are active on the iPad. Inactivate the app you want to use by sweeping it upward off the screen. (Don’t worry if you accidentally inactivate other apps. Apps can easily be restarted.) After inactivating the app, press the iPad home button once to return to the iPad's home screen. Then, select the app you want to use again. (It might be necessary to scroll horizontally to other pages of the iPad home screen in order to find the app icon.) The app's credentials should now be auto-filled when you attempt to log in again. If not, please consult an LPM staff member.

# How to contribute to the LPM Wiki

The wiki must be edited using [GitBook](https://app.gitbook.com/). You will need a GitBook credential (userid and password) from Sergio to gain access. If you already have a Git credential, that credential can be used to access GitBook, once authorized by Sergio.\
\
Please note that when you edit the LPM Wiki, your edit will only be a draft until you submit your edit for review and Sergio approves it. Only then will live Wiki pages be updated. <mark style="color:green;">**So, it is safe to learn to edit the LPM Wiki while editing.**</mark>

See the [LPM Wiki Welcome page](https://wiki.longmontpublicmedia.org/#how-to-edit-this-wiki) for more information about using and editing the LPM wiki.

When learning to use GitBook to edit the LPM Wiki, please note that [GitBook documentation](https://docs.gitbook.com/) exists.

* **Problems have been encountered copying a selected string from a GitBook documentation web page!?!!** 😠\
  \
  It is possible to copy the string by first using the browser's print function on Windows 10 to print the web page and to then select and copy from the draft displayed by the print function before the page is actually sent to a printer. Sigh.
* In the [**Keyboard shortcuts**](https://docs.gitbook.com/help-and-faq/keyboard-shortcuts) article, one learns that Ctrl-V will paste a string into Gitbook. among many other useful things.\
  \
  **But problems have been encountered pasting a string into GitBook with Ctrl-V when using a Mozilla Firefox browser on Windows 10, but Ctrl-V does work when using the Microsoft Edge browser.** 😠\
  \
  And the [**Keyboard shortcuts**](https://docs.gitbook.com/help-and-faq/keyboard-shortcuts) article does not mention that to move the cursor to the beginning of a new line within a block (without creating a new block), type Shift-Enter nor that a selected block or blocks can be deleted using **⌫** or **Delete**. 😠
* And one realizes that the GitBook Content Editor was first implemented on an Apple Mac when one sees pop-ups such as:\
  &#x20;<img src="/files/GnRR5ny5xqJHosLRn5KI" alt="" data-size="original">\
  The ![](/files/BRbUkFrNjHxHcpwWSWWk) symbol in the lower left is evidently intended to indicate the Options key on a MacBook keyboard. **Please note that the&#x20;**<mark style="color:green;">**Alt key**</mark>**&#x20;on a Windows or Linux keyboard serves the same purpose.**

  <img src="https://www.groovypost.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/alt-keyboard-featured.jpg" alt="" data-size="original">\
  \
  In retrospect, one could easily guess that GitBook was first implemented on a Mac since the names 'GitBook' and 'MacBook' are so similar. 🤔

The GitBook [**Content Editor Overview**](https://docs.gitbook.com/content-editor/overview) article says the GitBook editor is block-based but makes that sound like a good thing when it actually means that formatting is inflexible in many ways.

* When the Enter key is pressed at the end of an existing block, a new block is created following the existing block and the cursor is positioned at the start of the new block. A / can then be typed to select the format of the new block. If/when anything else is typed at the start of a new block, the typed content is added to the block and the block becomes a **Paragraph** block by default.\
  \
  To move the cursor to the beginning of a new line within a block (without creating a new block), type Shift-Enter.
* An [**Ordered list**](https://docs.gitbook.com/content-editor/blocks/ordered-list) or an [**Unordered list**](https://docs.gitbook.com/content-editor/blocks/unordered-list) can only be created by adding a new block which will contain the first item in the list.
* It is not possible to convert a **Paragraph** block to (for example) an **Ordered list** or **Unordered list** block. It is, however, possible to create a new block of the desired format, to copy\&paste content from the **Paragraph** block, and to then delete the **Paragraph** block.\
  \
  As noted in [**Selecting blocks and interacting with selected blocks**](https://docs.gitbook.com/content-editor/blocks#selecting-blocks-and-interacting-with-selected-blocks) section of the **Blocks** article, a selected block or blocks can be deleted using **⌫** or **Delete**.
* Multiple images can be added in a single **Image** block in which text is not permitted, but **Image** blocks do offer more flexible formatting options (resizing, etc) for images. Or, in a block which permits text, type a blank space followed by a / to open an insert palette which allows [an image to be added inline with text](https://docs.gitbook.com/content-editor/editing-content/inline#images).
* As noted in [**Adding an inline image to an ordered list**](https://docs.gitbook.com/content-editor/blocks/ordered-list#adding-an-inline-image-to-an-ordered-list) section of the **Ordered lists** article, if an ordered list spans more than one block then, when adding an additional list item in a new block, the item numbering might not correct unless continuation numbering is controlled manually. It is not obvious how to do that. (Note that the cited section documentation instructs you to (for example) type '3. ' to resume an ordered list starting at item 3. The period (.) cannot be omitted from the typed string!)

(It seems worth acknowledging that the GitBook Content Editor is used to compose web pages which are then rendered by web browsers by interpreting the [HTML markup language](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTML) output produced by the Content Editor. A web page is a series of [HTML elements](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTML_element) which are loosely analogous to Content Editor blocks. But HTML formatting is far less rigid than Content Editor formatting.)

The LPM Wiki has a [**table of contents**](https://docs.gitbook.com/content-editor/editor/navigation#table-of-contents) down the left side of the page. It is possible to reorder the table of contents by grabbing an entry and dragging it up or down to another position. Grabbing an entry is easy. Just left-click on the entry and hold the left-click.\
\
When dragging an entry, the Content Editor graphical user interface (GUI) on Windows 10 is **verryyy** finicky. It can be hard to get the GUI to present a horizontal line indicating that the new entry will be repositioned between two existing entries. Try moving the cursor very slowly while dragging an entry vertically across the midpoint between two other entries.\
\
And if the entry being dragged is dropped onto another existing table of contents entry, it will become a subentry of the entry onto which it is dropped.
